About the position

Leidos Defense Systems is seeking a talented Analytical Research Scientist to join a diverse team dedicated to creating unique solutions for complex problems. This position is based in Huntsville, AL, and involves engaging in various programs across the defense, space, cyber, and commercial fields. The Analytical Research Scientist will lead and participate in research and development tasks, which include developing new theories, creating methods, conducting tests, recording and interpreting data, and presenting results to both internal and external stakeholders. The role requires task leadership of a team comprising engineers, scientists, and technicians to design, build, and evaluate advanced systems. The successful candidate will also develop materials analysis techniques to prepare and analyze a range of samples across multiple programs. This position demands flexibility, as the individual will be expected to perform other supporting tasks as needed. The work will involve diverse technology areas such as developmental material production, electronics, power generation, structures, thermal protection, and system integration. Effective collaboration with a diverse group of team members, including internal staff, subcontractors, and customers, is essential, especially since some team members may be geographically dispersed.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and participate in research and development tasks in support of various programs.
  • Develop new theories and create methods for analysis.
  • Conduct tests, record and interpret data, and present results to stakeholders.
  • Provide task leadership to a team of engineers, scientists, and technicians.
  • Design, build, and evaluate advanced systems.
  • Develop materials analysis techniques for a range of samples across multiple programs.
  • Collaborate effectively with team members, subcontractors, and customers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemistry, Materials Science, Engineering, or one of the Physical Sciences.
  • Strong technical background in analytical chemistry and/or materials analysis with at least 4+ years of demonstrated experience.
  • Experience with analysis techniques such as ICP-MS, ICP-OES, SEM, TGA, TMA, XPS, XRD.
  • Highly organized with great attention to detail.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills with practical knowledge of data analysis and interpretation.
  • Background in diagnosing and resolving problems within multiple technical domains.
  • Self-motivated and capable of functioning effectively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Experience in developing experimental procedures and documenting standard operating procedures.
  • Experience handling hazardous materials and sample preparation/testing of various organic and inorganic compounds.
  • Proven experience managing and meeting accelerated schedules.
  • Effective communication and presentation of results to multiple functional disciplines.
  • Proficiency in using Microsoft Excel, Word, and PowerPoint.

Nice-to-haves

  • BS and 6+ years of relevant experience.
  • Active DOE Q clearance is preferred.
  • Experience working within multiple technical domains.
  • Experience with laboratory information management software (LIMS) and/or ISO 17025 quality guidelines.
  • Direct experience developing analytical methodology for testing a variety of materials (metals, ceramics, etc.).
