About the position

The Analytics Data Engineer plays a crucial role in querying and managing data across various sources, including patient and treatment data, to support research and strategic initiatives within the health system. This position focuses on designing and implementing scalable and secure data pipelines that facilitate actionable insights across different health system entities.

Responsibilities

  • Advises on the availability and interpretation of electronic health records (EHR) data to support research objectives.
  • Collaborates with researchers and data scientists to develop specifications for data to be exported and analyzed.
  • Designs, develops, and maintains robust pipelines to ingest, clean, transform, and annotate large volume data sets from various sources including EHR systems, utilizing SQL and R/Python.
  • Optimizes pipeline performance and scalability by developing efficient SQL queries.
  • Ensures data security and compliance with relevant regulations and standards, including HIPAA and SFHS IT Data Security policy.
  • Acts as the primary point of contact between research team, IT staff, and EDA Program staff to ensure accurate and timely collection and clarification of clinical data points.
  • Implements and manages processes to ensure accuracy, completeness, and consistency of extracted data, including routine audits and validation checks.
  • Identifies and resolves technical issues related to data extraction and processing, working closely with IT and EHR system vendors as needed.
  • Develops and generates regular reports, extracts, and dashboards to provide insights into the data extraction process, data quality, and research findings.
  • Ensures that all data extraction processes and protocols are thoroughly documented and comply with institutional policies, ethical guidelines, and regulatory requirements.
  • Facilitates the integration of EHR data with other sources, such as US Census Bureau's ACS data, to support comprehensive research analysis.
  • Stays up to date with the latest developments in EHR technologies and data management practices, continuously seeking opportunities to enhance the data extraction and preparation process.
  • Manages timelines, deliverables, and resources for data extraction projects, ensuring that milestones are met, and projects are delivered on time and within scope.
  • Provides researchers and staff with training and ongoing support on the use of EHR data and tools.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Data Analytics, Data Science, Information Technology or related field.
  • Epic Cognito or Epic Caboodle Certification, including one data model certification.
  • Minimum 5 years of related experience in Epic development, Data Science/Engineering or related experience.
  • Advanced knowledge of structured query language (SQL) and data catalogs.
  • Proven knowledge of data management to understand integrity issues and facilitate their resolution.
  • Strong Microsoft 365 skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
