About the position

The Data Engineer position at Unum involves designing, building, and maintaining data systems and pipelines to optimize data access for analytics and visualization. This role requires technical expertise in computer programming, database management, and data architecture, while also supporting business priorities with data engineering approaches. The position is open to candidates at various experience levels, from entry to experienced professionals.

Responsibilities

  • Develop, construct, test, and maintain data pipelines to support business requirements.
  • Integrate data from various sources including DB2, SQL Server, Web API, and Teradata.
  • Apply validation, aggregation, and reconciliation techniques to create a robust data framework.
  • Collaborate with data scientists and business partners to understand business problems and analytics solutions.
  • Create data structures tailored to specific business problems.
  • Develop data assets that meet scalability, extensibility, performance, and maintainability requirements.
  • Promote the development of solutions following appropriate engineering processes.
  • Contribute to the evolution of enterprise data architecture and emerging data frameworks.
  • Prepare results for interpretation and visualization, communicating findings to management.
  • Support integration of solutions within existing business processes using automation techniques.
  • Provide support to junior Data Engineer peers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a quantitative field is required; Master's degree is preferred.
  • 2 years of professional experience or equivalent relevant work experience preferred.
  • Experience in at least one object-oriented programming language (Java/Scala, Python).
  • Understanding of data architecture principles and infrastructure requirements for on-prem and Cloud platforms.
  • Ability to write complex SQL queries and troubleshoot them with minimal guidance.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with DevOps best practices including CI/CD and process automation.
  • Experience in financial services and working with senior management.
  • Demonstrated ability to coach or mentor team members.
