About the position

The Analytics Engineer plays a vital role in the Business Intelligence team at Year Up United, focusing on designing and implementing data-driven solutions to enhance decision-making processes. This position requires collaboration with analysts and business users to produce analytical materials that provide insights into operations and outcomes. The role is technical in nature, leveraging a modern data stack to support hundreds of staff across the country, and involves becoming fluent in the organization's operations and quantitative management systems. The Analytics Engineer also serves as an internal consultant, demonstrating insights that measure organizational impact and results, while engaging with students as a coach and advocate.

Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with team members and functional stakeholders to collect business requirements and desired results.
  • Design effective data models and dashboards to support organizational objectives.
  • Approach solutions with an outcomes-oriented agile mindset and an inclination toward iterative development, ensuring deliverables are met each sprint.
  • Design, test, and extend dimensional data models in dbt that meet internal standards for scalability, accuracy, and best practices.
  • Maintain and advocate for data standards through code review.
  • Extract data from external sources relevant to Year Up United's mission using tools like Fivetran and Matillion.
  • Utilize software engineering best practices such as version control via Git, CI/CD, and release management.
  • Implement data quality frameworks and data quality checks.
  • Work independently and effectively manage time across multiple priorities and projects.
  • Support ad-hoc requests and production issues identified using the ServiceNow system.

Requirements

  • 3+ years in the Data and Analytics space as an analyst, engineer, or equivalent role designing, implementing, operating, and extending dimensional models with SQL (Jinja or Python a plus).
  • 1+ years SQL-based analysis within a cloud-based data warehouse, preferably Snowflake.
  • 1+ years' experience building reports and dashboards in a data visualization tool, preferably Tableau.
  • Experience managing SQL transformations as code using dbt or similar.
  • Experience building reliable and resilient data pipelines using tools like DBT and Matillion.
  • Knowledge of software engineering best practices: DRY code, version control, code reviews, and CI/CD.
  • A passion for working with young adults and a strong commitment to the mission of Year Up United.
  • Understanding of the Opportunity Divide and its drivers.

Nice-to-haves

  • Managing a backlog of user stories using agile project management practices and methodologies.
  • Professional experience working in a related field, especially in IT or Education.
  • Familiarity with Salesforce, Netsuite, Workday, and Adaptive.
  • Experience with the stack: dbt, Matillion, Snowflake, Fivetran, Tableau, AWS.
