About the position

The Anesthesia Assistant at Hackensack Meridian Health plays a crucial role in supporting anesthesiologists and nurse anesthetists by preparing and setting up necessary equipment and supplies for surgical cases. This position involves operating various physiological monitors, collecting blood specimens, and ensuring the maintenance of technical equipment used in the operating room. The role emphasizes teamwork, technical competence, and adherence to safety protocols to enhance patient care during anesthesia procedures.

Responsibilities

  • Active participant of the anesthesia team, providing specialized procedures and techniques for patients undergoing anesthesia, including in emergencies.
  • Evaluates current equipment and technology, maintains records on equipment age, and schedules replacements as needed.
  • Collects blood specimens using established methods and aseptic techniques, ensuring compliance with safety recommendations.
  • Identifies educational needs and arranges for in-service education in collaboration with the Chief of Anesthesia, conducting at least one in-service per quarter.
  • Maintains the Anesthesiology Schedule by developing a monthly staffing schedule in coordination with the Chief of Anesthesia and OR scheduling office.
  • Oversees equipment and supply utilization, tracking trends and eliminating unnecessary supplies while evaluating new equipment as needed.
  • Organizes and manages the anesthesia workroom, ensuring appropriate instrument selection and troubleshooting equipment issues to prevent complications.
  • Assists in positioning and supporting patients for regional anesthesia procedures such as spinals and epidurals.
  • Demonstrates high technical competence by operating, calibrating, and performing routine maintenance on technical equipment.

Requirements

  • High School diploma, general equivalency diploma (GED), or equivalent programs.
  • Experience in the operating room (OR) and familiarity with OR supplies and the hospital setting.
  • Knowledge of sterile technique and asepsis, with the ability to apply these skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Certification as an Anesthesia Technician or Technologist.
