About the position

The Animal Care Coordinator (ACC) at East Bay SPCA is responsible for providing excellent care for shelter animals throughout their journey in and out of the shelter. This role involves initial intake assessments, ongoing supportive care, and facilitating adoptions while ensuring a high level of customer service. The ACC collaborates with the Customer Care team to match potential adopters with suitable animals and assists in the reunification of lost pets with their families.

Responsibilities

  • Perform routine daily animal care tasks including diet preparation, feeding, cleaning, and housebreaking for all shelter animals.
  • Conduct preliminary physical examinations on all cats and dogs received, ensuring necessary paperwork is completed.
  • Administer vaccines, treatments, medications, and perform antibody/antigen tests as needed.
  • Perform initial behavioral evaluations of dogs and cats, including health and behavior assessments of possible owner surrender animals.
  • Observe and document dog and cat behavior and health concerns, reporting to appropriate staff.
  • Deliver excellent customer service during adoptions, returns, surrenders, and other client interactions.
  • Facilitate the transfer of animals to EBSPCA in cooperation with the Animal Recruitment Coordinator.
  • Maintain organized animal records in both paper and electronic formats.
  • Provide feedback to supervisory staff regarding animal plans such as behavior modification, surgery, foster, adoption, and euthanasia.
  • Assist with answering phone calls and replying to email inquiries as needed.

Requirements

  • Minimum one year experience working with animals.
  • Knowledge of domestic animals including breeds, behavior, appropriate care, common health problems, and handling techniques.
  • Experience in an animal shelter setting is highly desirable.
  • Competent in basic veterinary techniques/procedures, such as venipuncture and administering vaccinations and oral medications.
  • Proven organizational skills and effective communication abilities.
  • Ability to multi-task and thrive in an active, dynamic environment.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications; familiarity with Shelter Buddy shelter software is desired.
  • Reliable transportation and a valid CA driver's license with evidence of insurability are strongly desired.
