About the position

The Animal Care Technician I position at Charles River Laboratories is an entry-level role focused on providing humane care for laboratory animals while learning essential skills in animal husbandry, handling, and data collection. The technician will undergo training to support study conduct and ensure the welfare of animals, contributing to the overall mission of improving health and well-being globally.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure good welfare and humane care for all animals through positive human-animal interactions.
  • Train in on-boarding skills including animal husbandry, handling, and cage manipulation.
  • Collect, document, review, and verify data in forms or electronic systems.
  • Review documentation for quality control requirements.
  • Stock PPE and clean the facility.
  • Use and maintain instrumentation and equipment.
  • Complete skill plan based on department training plan.
  • Perform all other related duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED preferred but not required.
  • No previous experience required; equivalent education and experience may be accepted.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and priorities.
  • Computer skills, including proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to maintain a safe working environment and follow safety procedures.
  • Ability to perform activities according to Good Laboratory Practices (GLP) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
  • Ability to work extended hours, including evenings and weekends, on short notice.

Nice-to-haves

  • Ability to learn a validated system for data management.
  • Experience in a laboratory or animal care setting.
