About the position

The Animal Care Technician position at North Carolina State University (NCSU) is a vital role within the Animal Resources department, responsible for the daily care of animals used in research and teaching. This position is classified as mandatory personnel, which means it may require working on weekends, holidays, and being on-call. The primary mission of the Animal Resources department is to provide optimal animal resources to NCSU faculty while ensuring compliance with regulatory requirements and institutional policies for animal care and use. The technician will be involved in various aspects of animal husbandry, including administering routine medications, preparing experimental diets, and maintaining sanitation and safety procedures within the animal care facility. In addition to daily care, the technician will be responsible for maintaining accurate animal census records, daily room logs, and medical treatment logs. The role also includes driving and transporting animals as needed. The technician will assist with the layout and setup for incoming studies and perform other duties as assigned. This position requires a strong commitment to the well-being of experimental animals and the ability to work with potentially hazardous materials and unpleasant odors. Candidates must demonstrate the competencies necessary to perform the work effectively and safely.

Responsibilities

  • Provide daily care for animals used in research and teaching.
  • Administer routine medications and prepare experimental or maintenance diets for research subjects.
  • Apply and maintain sanitation and safety procedures in the animal care facility.
  • Maintain accurate animal census records, daily room logs, and medical treatment logs.
  • Drive and transport animals as needed.

Requirements

  • Demonstrated possession of the competencies necessary to perform the work.
  • Ability to lift up to 60 pounds frequently and 90 pounds occasionally.
  • Experience in animal husbandry is required.
  • Ability to work with or around sick animals, potentially hazardous materials, cleaning chemicals, gas anesthetics, zoonotic diseases, and unpleasant odors.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with a wide variety of species care, especially livestock, poultry, and aquatics.
  • AALAS certifications are preferred.
