About The Position

The Animal Care Technician at Merck Sharp & Dohme is responsible for providing basic animal husbandry, observing animals, maintaining records, and assisting with technical procedures. The role involves cleaning and servicing animal units, ensuring the health and welfare of the animals, and supporting research and development personnel in various tasks related to animal care.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or GED; higher education is desirable.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience working in an animal test facility.
  • Basic knowledge of animal husbandry, health, and welfare for specific species.
  • Ability to perform physical work, including lifting up to 50 pounds.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to maintain basic records.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with zoonotic agents and immunizations.
  • Familiarity with animal welfare regulations.

Responsibilities

  • Provide basic animal husbandry, including feeding, watering, caring for, and socializing animals.
  • Observe test animals for adverse reactions and report any abnormal behavior to the appropriate personnel.
  • Clean and disinfect animal units after experiments, including changing filters and fumigation.
  • Assist research and development personnel with technical procedures such as blood collection, restraining, and inoculation.
  • Maintain accurate records on animals involved in studies and review animal protocol studies prior to initiation.
  • Stock animal rooms and identify animals through tagging and proper placement.
