About the position
The Animal Control Officer plays a crucial role in the San Francisco Department of Animal Care & Control (SFACC) by ensuring the welfare of animals through enforcement of animal care laws, responding to emergencies, and educating the public on responsible pet ownership. This position involves routine patrols, handling and caring for animals, and investigating cases of animal cruelty and neglect.
Responsibilities
- Conduct routine patrols throughout the city to confine stray animals and transport them to the shelter.
- Respond to emergency rescue requests for injured or sick animals.
- Administer basic first aid and transport animals for emergency treatment.
- Process impounded animals and administer vaccinations.
- Respond to public complaints regarding animal care and control, mediating issues between neighbors.
- Investigate allegations of animal abuse and neglect, gathering evidence and documenting findings.
- Educate the public about animal care laws and responsible pet ownership.
- Maintain assigned vehicles and work areas in a safe and sanitary condition.
- Produce and maintain accurate case files and reports using a computer system.
- Assist other city agencies in rescuing or taking custody of animals.
Requirements
- One year of animal handling experience involving public contact or customer service at a facility that cares for animals.
- Possession of a valid California driver license.
- Successful completion of the Penal Code 832 course and state-mandated euthanasia training within the probationary period.
