About the position

The Animal Control Officer position at Newaygo County involves enforcing state laws related to animal control, responding to citizen complaints, and working closely with law enforcement and emergency personnel. The officer will patrol the county to manage stray animals and address various animal-related concerns, serving as a key member of the Animal Control Department under the supervision of the Chief Animal Control Officer.

Responsibilities

• Enforce state laws regarding animal control and issue citations for violations.
• Respond to and investigate complaints related to stray animals, animal bites, and other animal-related issues.
• Work with animal owners and neighbors to resolve animal-related problems.
• Investigate suspected cases of animal abuse or neglect, including interviewing witnesses and determining citation issuance.
• Complete case reports for the Prosecutor's office and testify in court as needed.
• Document results of investigations and maintain accurate records using an electronic record management system.
• Assist in maintaining the kennel, including cleaning and minor repairs.
• Perform other duties as assigned that are related to animal control services.

Requirements

• High school graduation or equivalent.
• One to two years of experience in animal assessment, care, handling, and investigation standards.
• Must obtain certification as an Animal Control Officer by the Michigan Department of Agriculture within 6 months of employment.
• Must obtain euthanasia certification within 6 months of employment.
• Possess a valid Michigan Drivers License.
