About The Position

The Animal Control Officer is responsible for assisting stray, lost, ill, injured, and abandoned animals while enforcing city and state laws regarding animal control. This role involves direct interaction with the public and requires a professional demeanor, as well as knowledge of animal handling and care. The officer works under the supervision of the TJO Executive Director and does not supervise other employees.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of two years in animal welfare/control.
  • Knowledge of animal capture and handling techniques.
  • Ability to deal with unruly, vicious, and dangerous animals in a humane manner.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with peers and the public.

Nice To Haves

  • Bilingual (Spanish) preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Provide assistance to stray, lost, ill, injured, and abandoned animals.
  • Enforce all City and state laws and ordinances regarding animals.
  • Serve as a representative of the Thomas J. O'Connor Animal Control and Adoption Center.
  • Ensure proper care and attention is provided to all animals in custody.
  • Assist with the selection of animals to be euthanized based on knowledge of animal health and behavior.
  • Investigate animal bite reports and advise owners and victims on procedures and options.
  • Adhere to humane and business practices in accordance with facility policies.
  • Analyze data related to facility activities and prepare reports and recommendations.
  • Maintain relationships with public service organizations, municipal governments, and the community.
