About the position
The Animal Shelter Attendant is responsible for the care and maintenance of the animal shelter, ensuring the cleanliness and health of the animals. This role involves assisting with adoptions, coordinating with rescues, and performing various duties to prevent euthanasia of shelter animals. The position requires working under the supervision of the Animal Services Manager and involves both routine care and emergency response during disasters.
Responsibilities
- Cleans and maintains animal confinement areas, disinfects cages, and ensures the cleanliness of the facility.
- Feeds and waters confined animals, and makes routine inspections to monitor their health and safety.
- Encourages adoptions and assists with the adoption process, including paperwork and fee collection.
- Provides customer service to visitors looking for lost pets or interested in adopting.
- Administers medication and vaccinations to animals in the shelter.
- Maintains records of impounded animals and supply inventories.
- Reports health or behavioral problems of animals to Animal Care Technicians.
- Performs euthanasia of un-adoptable or diseased animals as prescribed.
- Works weekends, after hours, and holidays as needed, including during county emergencies.
Requirements
- High school diploma or GED.
- Valid NC driver's license.
- Experience with animal handling and care.
Nice-to-haves
- Certification in animal euthanasia techniques.
- Certification in vaccinating animals for rabies.
