About the position

The Animal Shelter Manager is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the shelter, ensuring the well-being of all animals in care, and managing staff and volunteers. This role requires strong leadership skills, a passion for animal welfare, and the ability to effectively communicate with both team members and the public. The manager will implement policies and procedures to enhance shelter operations while promoting a positive environment for both animals and staff.

Responsibilities

  • Oversee the daily operations of the Animal Shelter including client services, animal needs, and facilities management.
  • Manage 7 staff members directly.
  • Ensure appropriate training and development for department staff and applicable volunteers.
  • Participate in management, supervisory, and board meetings.
  • Lead and mentor a team of staff, ensuring top-notch training and development.
  • Manage staffing needs, conduct performance reviews, and make impactful hiring decisions.
  • Coordinate adoption events and collaborate with external partners to promote the shelter's mission.
  • Act as the primary escalation point for staff, addressing challenges and ensuring safe practices.
  • Participate in strategic planning and budgeting to enhance the shelter's future.
  • Communicate frequently with community members and others to coordinate fundraising efforts and foster good public relations.

Requirements

  • Proven leadership experience managing people and fostering a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to create and implement proper procedures for all areas of animal shelter operations.
  • Strong skills in animal health, behavior, and handling.
  • Comfortable in a fast-paced, emotionally charged environment and can handle the challenges of working in a shelter.
  • Experience hiring, scheduling, training, and evaluating staff.
  • Minimum of 2 years in animal shelter or animal welfare.
  • Minimum of 2 years in a supervisory role.

Nice-to-haves

  • Customer service experience (1 year preferred).
  • Non-profit management experience.
