About the position

The Apheresis Specialist at Houston Methodist Hospital is responsible for performing apheresis procedures on patients, including therapeutic, designated, and special autologous procedures. This role emphasizes collaboration within the patient care team, ensuring accurate patient evaluations, maintaining thorough documentation, and managing patient reactions during procedures. The specialist is also involved in quality control and safety measures within the laboratory environment.

Responsibilities

  • Perform apheresis procedures on patients, including therapeutic, designated, and special autologous procedures.
  • Accurately evaluate patient screening and medical history according to regulatory requirements.
  • Maintain thorough and accurate documentation of procedures and work performed.
  • Organize workload and set priorities to ensure efficient operations.
  • Collect whole blood from patients using sterile techniques and manage patient reactions during procedures.
  • Administer medications under the direction of the Therapeutic Apheresis Medical Director.
  • Perform quality control on instruments and equipment within established guidelines.
  • Participate in departmental projects and seek continuing education opportunities.

Requirements

  • High School diploma or equivalent education.
  • Minimum of five years of whole blood phlebotomy experience.
  • BLS - Basic Life Support certification.

Nice-to-haves

  • Knowledge of medications used during apheresis procedures.
  • Strong organizational skills to handle a heavy workload.
  • Basic computer knowledge and proficiency in operating multiple computer systems.
