The Marion County Public Defender Agency is dedicated to providing legal representation to residents of Marion County who are unable to afford private legal counsel, particularly in matters that involve liberty interests such as criminal cases. This role is crucial as it supports individuals in navigating the complexities of the legal system, including felony and misdemeanor cases, Title IV D cases, civil commitments, juvenile court matters, and appeals. The agency is committed to public service and aims to foster a collaborative and compliant work environment that meets the needs of the community it serves. As an Appellate Attorney I, the incumbent will be responsible for effectively representing indigent clients in appeals from judgments in various legal proceedings, including juvenile, criminal, CHINS/TPR, and civil commitment cases. This position requires the exercise of independent judgment, particularly in situations where established policies and procedures may not be available. The attorney will be expected to make complex decisions that significantly impact the policies of the Public Defender Agency, while also adhering to state and federal laws. The role demands a high level of initiative, creativity, and independent problem-solving skills. The attorney will conduct legal research, review facts of assigned cases, consult with clients regarding appeal issues, and maintain regular communication about case developments. Additionally, the attorney will prepare and file necessary motions and legal briefs, represent clients in oral arguments before the Indiana appellate courts, and provide research support to trial court teams. Collaboration with other members of the Appellate Division is essential, including brainstorming sessions, brief reviews, and mooting for oral arguments. Confidentiality must be maintained at all times, and the list of responsibilities may expand as deemed necessary by management.
