The Application Database Administrator (DBA) is a vital member of the Enterprise Data Services (EDS) team within the Division of Information Technology (DIT) at the University of Maryland, College Park. This position is responsible for providing comprehensive database optimization and administration for enterprise-level, cross-campus services. The DBA will configure and maintain various database systems including MSSQL (both on-premises and in Azure/AWS), Postgres databases (AWS RDS), Oracle (AWS RDS), and the Redshift data warehouse platform. Key responsibilities include monitoring database health, performance, availability, deployment, backup and recovery, and security audits. The DBA will also focus on optimization and SQL tuning, ensuring that databases operate efficiently and effectively. In addition to the technical responsibilities, the DBA will analyze and guide customers with SQL, T-SQL, and PostgreSQL queries to meet application requirements. This includes writing SQL, T-SQL, and PostgreSQL scripts. The position requires providing 24/7 support for critical production systems, performing scheduled maintenance, and supporting release deployment activities outside of regular business hours. The DBA must possess a working knowledge of AWS and Azure architecture, as well as modern data stack tools for the data lifecycle. This role is considered essential, meaning the DBA may be required to work at the normal work location or an alternative location during major emergencies to maintain continuity of university services. Being on call during certain periods is also a requirement of this position.
