About the position

GlobalFoundries is a leading full-service semiconductor foundry that provides a unique combination of design, development, and fabrication services to some of the world's most inspired technology companies. The Application Engineering - Design (AE-D) team at GlobalFoundries is responsible for providing direct customer support on the Process Design Kits (PDKs), design tool environment, and technologies for chip design. As an intern in this team, you will have the opportunity to engage in meaningful work that equips you with the skills necessary to embark on a career in the fast-paced and growing semiconductor industry after graduation. In this role, you will assess incoming technical cases, collaborate with Application Engineers and other internal teams, and assist in driving internal solutions that support excellent customer support. You will be involved in resolving technical questions, which may include debugging issues with design tools, verifying reported bugs in the PDK, and documenting them clearly for assessment. Additionally, you will support the US AE-D team in metric tracking and participate in technical discussions with the PDK development team to implement fixes and enhancements. The internship program is designed to provide students with one-on-one mentorship, work assignments that prioritize growth and potential, professional development opportunities, and the chance to network with executives. This is an excellent opportunity for students who are at least sophomores and pursuing a Master's or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering, as it offers a pathway to gain practical experience in the semiconductor industry.

Responsibilities

  • Support the US AE-D team in resolving technical questions, which may involve issue debugging with design tools.
  • Verify reported bugs in the Process Design Kit (PDK) and document clearly for assessment.
  • Support the US AE-D team with metric tracking.
  • Participate in technical discussions with the PDK development team to implement fixes and enhancements.
  • Perform all activities in a safe and responsible manner and support all Environmental, Health, Safety & Security requirements and programs.

Requirements

  • At least a sophomore at the time of application and actively pursuing a Master's or PhD in Electrical or Computer Engineering through an accredited degree program during the time of internship.
  • Must have at least an overall 3.0 GPA and be in good academic standing.
  • Fluency in English (Written & Verbal).
  • Ability to work at least 40 hours per week during the internship.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior related internship or co-op experience.
  • Demonstrated prior leadership experience in the workplace, school projects, competitions, etc.
  • Project management skills, i.e. the ability to innovate and execute on solutions that matter; the ability to navigate ambiguity.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong planning & organizational skills.
  • Experience with tools such as Cadence, Mentor/Siemens, and Synopsys, device engineering and/or silicon technology process development is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with IC design, design tools, and flows.
