About the position

The Application Developer position at BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina involves providing technical solutions to commercial customers through both mainframe and distributed technologies. The role requires performing all phases of application systems analysis, including coding, testing, debugging, and maintaining programs, while ensuring that junior team members understand business requirements and that applications are delivered on time.

Responsibilities

  • Ensure team members understand the business requirements that drive the analysis and design of quality technical solutions.
  • Provide expert system knowledge, perform research, attend meetings, and review documents.
  • Maintain and modify programs according to specifications.
  • Code, compile, and implement application software that is delivered on time and within budget.
  • Evaluate basic interrelationships in immediate programming area to determine how changes in one program will affect another related area.
  • Test modified programs, create necessary test files and data, verify logic, debug, and write relevant documentation.
  • Analyze production systems, recommend systems enhancements, provide instruction to production support team.
  • Research customer issues and determine appropriate resolutions.
  • Coordinate implementation of modifications or enhancements.
  • Analyze and evaluate existing or proposed systems.
  • Develop functional design and technical specifications, concept diagrams, and work flow diagrams and related procedures to process data using appropriate systems environment/platform.
  • Document programs/procedures.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in a job-related field or equivalent work experience (4 years job-related work experience or Associate's degree and 2 years job-related work experience).
  • 4 years of application development, systems testing or other job-related experience.
  • Strong understanding of applications/development, quality assurance and integration methodologies in a mainframe, midrange, web, and/or PC/LAN environment.
  • Strong analysis, decision-making, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to work well under pressure and as part of a team.
  • Strong knowledge of interpersonal skills/team building.

Nice-to-haves

  • Exposure to large systems with an insurance company or financial institution.
  • Mainframe development experience or an interest in learning mainframe technologies.
  • Experience with COBOL, APS, DB2 and IMS.
  • Knowledge/Proficiency in JavaScript, Node.js, Jenkins, GIT, Vue, Python, VSCode, MongoDB.
