About the position

The Application Developer at the Teacher Retirement System is responsible for leading and executing complex software application projects that significantly impact the agency's ability to serve its members. This hybrid role requires collaboration with the application development team, IT staff, and agency employees, focusing on high-level analysis, project planning, and technical support.

Responsibilities

  • Lead multiple concurrent software application projects with significant impact on TRS's effectiveness.
  • Perform high-level analysis of end user business processes and automation needs.
  • Develop application systems or enhancements for existing programs.
  • Coordinate coding, testing, and debugging of programs in various software languages.
  • Document programming logic and user procedures.
  • Participate in or lead code reviews and program demonstrations.
  • Respond to application-related requests and troubleshoot issues for agency staff.
  • Develop and document technology standards for the agency.
  • Provide training and technical assistance to IT staff.
  • Offer subject matter expertise to other programmers.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, computer engineering, or a closely related field.
  • 3-5 years of full-time related experience in computer programming.
  • 1-2 years of experience leading major software application projects.
  • Experience may be substituted with a master's or doctoral degree on a year-for-year basis.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in requirements gathering and refinement, creating specifications, and conducting unit testing.
  • Experience managing projects using a well-defined systems development lifecycle methodology (SDLC).
  • Knowledge of Agile software development practices.
  • Experience working with business management, analysts, and quality assurance teams.
  • 2 years of experience developing software applications using Spring Boot, CXF Web Services, RESTful and SOAP APIs, Java, Microsoft SQL Server, JMS Messaging, or JBoss Fuse.
