About the position

The Application Development Scrum Master at USAA is a mid-level role focused on facilitating Agile practices within a high-performing team of Software Engineers. This position is crucial for organizing and executing work related to the development of applications that manage claims for USAA members. The Scrum Master will interact directly with engineering teams, Release Train Engineers, Product Owners, and Business Owners to define product backlogs and priorities, ensuring that Agile values and principles are upheld while delivering value to customers.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates major Agile ceremonies across multiple development teams and advises teams to support a smooth transition to Agile practices.
  • Enables continuous improvement and facilitates communication across teams to manage dependencies and remove impediments.
  • Supports and educates product owners in refining and managing the product backlog.
  • Influences and facilitates the empowerment of a self-organizing team and schedules cross-functional meetings.
  • Ensures progress tools and reports provide transparency on team productivity.
  • Performs risk, issue, and dependency management for teams and ensures compliance with policies.
  • Ensures release management practices align with enterprise standards and acts as Agile SME to teams and management.
  • Participates in Scrum Master Community of Practice for continuous learning.
  • Understands and encourages technical engineering practices like test-driven development and continuous integration.
  • Adheres to Enterprise Project Management Office (EPMO) processes and standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience may substitute for a degree.
  • 4 years of relevant experience in process improvement, project management, or Agile/Scrum.
  • Knowledge of multiple Agile delivery frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Scrum, SAFe).
  • Knowledge of compliance and risk management frameworks.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Nice-to-haves

  • SAFE Certified
  • PMI Certified
  • Minimum of 4 years as a Scrum Master
  • Business knowledge in the Insurance industry, especially claims management.
  • Experience with Agile metrics and KPIs.
  • Experience using Atlassian Agile tools (Jira and Confluence).
  • Understanding of software design patterns and application architectural patterns.
