About the position

The Application Development Scrum Master at USAA is a mid-level role focused on facilitating Agile practices within a high-performing software engineering team. This position is responsible for ensuring that teams adhere to Agile values and principles, guiding them through processes such as Scrum and Kanban, and helping to remove impediments to progress. The Scrum Master will work closely with various stakeholders, including Product Owners and Release Train Engineers, to manage the product backlog and lead the team towards achieving their objectives while fostering a culture of continuous improvement.

Responsibilities

  • Facilitates major Agile ceremonies across multiple development teams.
  • Consults with and advises teams to support a smooth transition to Agile practices.
  • Enables continuous improvement and facilitates communication across teams.
  • Supports and educates product owners in refining and managing the product backlog.
  • Influences and facilitates the empowerment of a self-organizing team.
  • Schedules and facilitates cross-functional meetings.
  • Ensures appropriate progress tools and reports provide transparency on team productivity.
  • Performs risk, issue, and dependency management for teams.
  • Ensures release management practices align with enterprise standards.
  • Acts as Agile Subject Matter Expert (SME) to teams and management.
  • Participates in Scrum Master Community of Practice.
  • Encourages teams to leverage technical engineering practices.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or 4 years of related experience in lieu of a degree.
  • 4 years of relevant experience in process improvement, project management, or Agile/Scrum.
  • Knowledge of multiple Agile delivery frameworks (e.g., Kanban, Scrum, SAFe).
  • Knowledge of compliance and risk management frameworks.
  • Advanced working knowledge of Microsoft Office products.

Nice-to-haves

  • SAFE Certified
  • PMI Certified
  • Minimum of 4 years playing the Scrum Master role
  • Business knowledge in the Insurance industry, especially in claims management.
  • Experience using Atlassian Agile tools (Jira and Confluence).
  • Understanding of software design patterns and application architectural patterns.
