About the position

Judd Wire Inc., a Sumitomo Electric Group company, is seeking an Application Engineer - Automotive to join our Design and Development team at our Turners Falls, MA office. This position is integral to the development of wire and cable products specifically designed for the Automotive industry. The successful candidate will collaborate with cross-functional teams to innovate and enhance product offerings, ensuring that our products meet the highest standards of performance and quality. As an Application Engineer, you will be responsible for creating and maintaining material and product specifications, bills of material, and manufacturing instructions for existing product platforms. You will also be tasked with developing new design standards and improving existing ones for Judd Wire products. Your role will involve evaluating and implementing enhancements to products and instructions to achieve improvements in quality, cost, and efficiency. In addition to technical responsibilities, you will provide essential support to Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality teams regarding product design and testing. You will lead design review and corrective action meetings to address any issues related to design and workmanship. Your expertise will be crucial in designing and developing automotive wire and cable to support new business opportunities. You will also participate in customer meetings to gather input for current and future products, ensuring that customer needs are met effectively. This position requires a proactive approach to problem-solving and the ability to communicate technical information clearly to both internal teams and external customers. You will create test reports for customers and qualifying agencies to maintain product approvals and assist with various tasks and projects as assigned by your manager or senior management. Overall, this role is pivotal in driving product innovation and ensuring that Judd Wire continues to meet the evolving demands of the automotive sector.

Responsibilities

  • Create and maintain material and product specifications, bills of material, and manufacturing instructions for existing product platforms.
  • Create new and improve existing design standards for Judd Wire products.
  • Evaluate and implement improvements to products and instructions to achieve quality, cost, and efficiency improvements.
  • Provide technical support to Manufacturing, Purchasing, and Quality concerning product design and testing.
  • Lead design review and corrective action meetings for production products to resolve problems in design and workmanship.
  • Design and develop Automotive wire and cable in support of new business opportunities.
  • Work as a member of cross-functional teams to develop new product platforms and platform extensions.
  • Understand relevant industry and customer specifications and existing products to inform development decisions.
  • Participate in customer meetings to understand customer input for current and future products.
  • Learn application engineering guidance for Automotive wire and cable and provide answers to customers requesting standard information.
  • Create test reports for customers and qualifying agencies to maintain product approvals.
  • Assist with tasks and/or projects assigned by direct manager or senior management.
  • Perform other similar duties as required within the department, or as assigned by manager.
  • Coordinate with Engineering team to share supporting task workload as appropriate.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in relevant Engineering field with applicable coursework or experience.
  • Knowledge of basic principles of wire conductors and insulators, current flow, and electric circuits.
  • Effective technical writing skills for internal and external customers.
  • Ability to work within and lead cross-functional teams to solve engineering problems.

Nice-to-haves

  • 1 to 3 years of experience in the wire and cable industry.
  • Knowledge in specifications, standards and product testing protocols for Automotive wire and cable.
