About the position

As an Application Engineer (Backend) at Discover, you will play a crucial role in building and releasing reliable software systems at scale. This position involves collaborating with cross-functional teams to design and develop technical solutions that support core financial functionalities. You will be responsible for innovating and advocating for best practices while solving complex problems and guiding the team from inception to production.

Responsibilities

• Contribute to product team deliverables using Java programming technology
• Diagnose opportunities for automation and efficiency in the end-to-end product delivery cycle
• Solve complex technical problems and explore new ways to bring value
• Collaborate with business partners to understand all business requirements
• Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality to production
• Achieve team commitments and influence others to do the same by using informal leadership and highly developed communication skills
• Oversee design decisions and guide the team to achieve key results for assigned products
• Remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures
• Contribute to and lead technology communities at Discover

Requirements

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, Informatics, Information Security, Information Technology or related field
• 3+ years of experience in Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related field
• Technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale (internal applicants only)

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with Cloud Technology - AWS, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, OpenShift
• Extreme automation mindset as it pertains to testing and build/deploy concepts
• CI/CD Pipeline experience via Jenkins, Github Actions, Chef, Ansible, Nexus
• Knowledge of Test Driven Development
• Familiarity with tech stack including Java, Spring, Kafka, Openshift, and Jenkins
