About the position

Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL) is seeking an Application Engineer I - Protection to join our team in Jackson, Mississippi. This role is designed for individuals who thrive in a fast-paced and challenging environment, offering continuous opportunities for growth and learning. As an Application Engineer, you will play a crucial role in helping our customers apply SEL technology and solutions effectively. Your responsibilities will include troubleshooting issues and providing training to ensure our clients can utilize our products to their fullest potential. In this position, you will provide technical leadership and mentoring to other SEL Application Engineers, particularly in the areas of power system protection and control. You will engage directly with customers, assisting them in applying and troubleshooting SEL products through various means, including site visits, demonstrations, and training courses. Your expertise will be essential in developing, testing, and documenting solutions to complex challenges related to power system protection, control, and metering, particularly as the power grid evolves. Additionally, you will contribute to the development of new product specifications and enhancements, participate in seminars and industry meetings, and teach courses at SEL University. Your contributions will extend to writing and reviewing white papers, application guides, and technical papers, showcasing your knowledge and expertise in the field. You will also embody and teach SEL's core values and principles of operations, ensuring that our commitment to world-class manufacturing is upheld in all aspects of your work.

Responsibilities

  • Provide technical leadership and mentoring for SEL Application Engineers in power system protection and control.
  • Help customers apply and troubleshoot SEL products through visits, demonstrations, training courses, and telephone contact.
  • Develop, test, and document solutions to complex power system protection, control, and metering challenges using SEL products and solutions.
  • Contribute to new product specifications and product enhancements.
  • Participate and present at SEL seminars, industry technical meetings, and conferences.
  • Teach and develop course materials for SEL University.
  • Contribute to white papers, application guides, industry journals, and/or technical papers through authorship and review.
  • Model and teach SEL Values, Principles of Operations, and World-Class Manufacturing principles.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Requirements

  • Professional Engineer license and/or Senior IEEE membership for US/CAN region.
  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent engineering degree).
  • 10+ years of experience in power systems and industry practice.
  • Ability to write and speak English coherently.

Nice-to-haves

  • Relevant work experience and knowledge of utility and/or industrial power systems with an emphasis on protection, control, and operations.
  • Familiarity with IEEE, IEC, and NERC standards that govern and guide power system protection, control, and metering methods.
  • Specific field experience with setting, testing, and/or commissioning of protective relays and meters in various focus areas such as Transmission Line Protection, Transformer Protection, Capacitor Bank Protection, Bus Protection, Distribution Feeder Protection, Motor Protection, Revenue Metering, Power Quality, and Generator Protection.
  • Ability to build technical support relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to teach our customers to succeed independently.
