About the position

The Onyx Research Data Platform organization represents a significant investment by GSK in Research & Development and Digital & Tech, aimed at enhancing our capacity to utilize data, knowledge, and predictive analytics to discover new medicines. This full-stack organization encompasses product and portfolio leadership, data engineering, infrastructure and DevOps, as well as data, metadata, and knowledge platforms, alongside AI/ML and analysis platforms. The Application Engineer I will play a crucial role in advancing GSK's technological capabilities, focusing on the development and support of data-driven applications. This position requires a solid foundation in software engineering, emphasizing hands-on technical work. The ideal candidate will be involved in the development, deployment, and maintenance of applications tailored to meet the needs of our scientific user base. Responsibilities include collaborating with cross-functional teams to understand user requirements, assisting in the design of scalable and efficient application architectures, and integrating data analytics tools to enhance application functionality. Staying updated on current technological trends in application development and software engineering practices is essential to ensure that applications are reliable and meet evolving demands. The Software Engineer will also participate in code reviews, testing, and troubleshooting to ensure the security and performance of applications. The role encompasses the maintenance and support of existing applications, focusing on high availability, reliability, and optimal performance. The ideal candidate should demonstrate a strong interest in how data-driven applications can accelerate innovation and possess strong communication skills, both technical and non-technical, to liaise with stakeholders, including management, IT teams, and scientific personnel, ensuring that technology solutions align with business strategies and scientific objectives.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the development, deployment, and maintenance of full-stack, data-driven, cloud applications that serve our scientific community.
  • Develop, measure, and monitor key metrics for all applications and services and consistently seek to iterate on and improve them.
  • Operate and support applications deployed in a production environment.
  • Take loosely defined mock-ups and produce rapid MVPs through to production-grade experiences.
  • Work with product teams on product roadmaps and developing end-user requirements.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or related field.
  • 2+ years of experience in front end technologies: JavaScript, Typescript, React.js, Angular.js or similar.
  • 2+ years of experience with at least one common web backend language: e.g., Python, Scala, Java, Javascript (Node.js) including toolchains for documentation, testing, and operations/observability.
  • 2+ years of experience with modern software development tools/ways of working (e.g. git/GitHub, DevOps tools, metrics/monitoring).

Nice-to-haves

  • Developing and deploying applications in a cloud environment like Google Cloud (preferred), AWS, Azure.
  • Experience in an open-source web framework preferably implemented in JS, TypeScript, Python, Java, Scala, or similar.
  • Experience with Authentication & Authorization Mechanisms e.g. OAuth2.
  • Application experience of CI/CD implementations using git and a common CI/CD stack (e.g., Jenkins, CircleCI, GitLab, Azure DevOps).
  • Experience in agile software development and common environments such as Jira and Confluence.
  • Knowledge of database modeling, database concepts and SQL.
  • Experience with data visualization frameworks like D3.js, Plotly, Matplotlib, or similar.
