About the position

As an Application Engineer in the Mobility Powersports division at Gates Corporation, you will play a pivotal role in driving technical communication and calculations for our motorcycle, scooter, and powersports segment customers. This position is based in our Rochester Hills office and offers a unique opportunity for professional growth in engineering while also engaging with commercial business interactions. In this role, you will be responsible for supporting assigned Original Equipment (OE) 2-wheel customers through various technical and analytical tasks. Your responsibilities will include performing analytical calculations, delivering technical presentations aimed at business development, and conducting Design Failure Mode and Effects Analysis (DFMEA) and Design Verification Plan and Report (DVP&R) reviews. You will also be involved in prototype design and procurement, managing testing requirements, and serving as the primary point of contact for all customer technical communications. Your role will require you to troubleshoot customer issues and provide expedient support as needed, manage internal testing to support global product or system development, and observe and report field trends, issues, or needs to the global team. Additionally, you will support overall business development goals and needs, ensuring that your contributions align with the company’s vision and values while adhering to best engineering design and execution practices.

Responsibilities

  • Directly support assigned OE 2-wheel customers through analytical calculations.
  • Deliver technical presentations for business development.
  • Conduct DFMEA and DVP&R reviews.
  • Design and/or procure prototypes as needed.
  • Manage testing requirements and execution supporting DVP&R or other customer requests.
  • Act as the customer point of contact for all technical communications.
  • Troubleshoot customer issues and provide expedient support as required.
  • Manage internal testing to support global product or system development.
  • Observe and report field trends, issues, or needs to the global team as appropriate.
  • Support overall business development goals and needs.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Engineering Degree (or equivalent) in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering is desirable.
  • Minimum of 2 to 5 years of experience in a relevant field.
  • Knowledge of 2-wheel motorcycles or scooters is a plus.
  • Familiarity with electric vehicle powertrains is a plus.
  • Understanding of power transmission belts or applications is a plus.
  • Knowledgeable across the full spectrum of typical engineering core competencies.
  • Proven skills in handling customers and managing communication effectively.
  • Ability to meet deadlines and demonstrate effective time management skills.
  • Excellent business ethics and integrity.
  • Strong team player with the ability to support other team members and share knowledge for cross-training.
  • Self-directed and motivated with insights and ideas to motivate sales teams.
  • Strong communication skills, including presentation and negotiation skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in the powersports industry.
  • Familiarity with fluid power systems.
  • Experience with product testing and validation processes.
