About the position

The Application Engineer for Reciprocating Compressors at Chart Industries is a pivotal role that focuses on performing applications engineering activities to support proposal, sales, and bookings objectives. This position requires a proactive approach to seek out and successfully close new equipment orders for Howden diaphragm and reciprocating compressors, particularly in Hydrogen and related applications across North America. The engineer will represent the company in various external engagements, including customer interactions, supplier negotiations, and public activities. A significant part of the role involves leading the new order entry and handover process to project execution teams, as well as participating in initiatives aimed at new business development, product enhancements, and process improvements. On a day-to-day basis, the Application Engineer will receive and review customer specifications to ensure that technical and commercial requirements for new equipment projects are met. This includes developing competitive proposals for Howden products and services, conducting technical reviews of project specifications, and identifying any requirements that fall outside standard design scopes. The engineer will also be responsible for developing comprehensive mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment package designs, establishing cost estimates, and preparing high-level schedules and resource plans to ensure successful project completion. The role requires the preparation and presentation of formal quotations to customers, which encompass technical data, pricing summaries, and commercial details. The engineer will lead technical and commercial communications with customers, aiming to refine proposals based on customer feedback. Additionally, the Application Engineer will drive the internal proposal process, collaborating with various departments such as project management, design engineering, and supply chain to ensure all aspects of the proposal are accounted for. Providing technical assistance and support to customers and sales representatives is also a key responsibility, as is maintaining proficiency in application engineering skills and participating in continuous improvement initiatives to enhance customer satisfaction.

Responsibilities

  • Receive and review customer specifications for technical and commercial requirements for new equipment projects.
  • Develop and align proposals for Howden products and services to generate competitive technical and commercial proposals.
  • Perform technical review of customer/project specifications and identify requirements outside of standard scope/design.
  • Develop overall mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical equipment package design concepts.
  • Establish cost estimates for equipment and services to achieve competitive proposal selling prices.
  • Develop high-level schedules and resource plans for proposed projects.
  • Prepare and present formal product and services quotations to customers.
  • Lead technical and commercial proposal/design concept communications with customers.
  • Drive the internal proposal process throughout the sales phase.
  • Provide technical assistance and support to customers and sales representatives.
  • Ensure proposals are current and sensitive to market/customer needs.
  • Facilitate technical and commercial negotiations with customers.
  • Partner with central functions such as Quality, Engineering, Finance, IT, Legal, and HR.
  • Maintain and improve proficiency in application engineering skills, tools, and techniques.
  • Participate in continuous improvement practices and goals.
  • Provide technical and commercial assistance to project execution and field services.
  • Represent the company in a professional manner.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.
  • Familiarity with air and gas handling, rotating equipment, or heavy industrial industry.
  • Familiarity with specifying high pressure piping systems, heat exchangers, ASME vessels, and associated instrumentation.
  • Experience with application sizing software for reciprocating or diaphragm compressors.
  • Ability to perform and understand engineering calculations.
  • Ability to interpret and understand engineering drawings and bills of material.
  • Familiarity with various industry standards such as ASME B3.13, Section VIII, API 618, or similar.
  • Ability to compose professional documents such as reports and procedures.
  • Ability to compose professional technical and commercial proposals/estimates.
  • Computer literate with knowledge of engineering programs, business systems, Microsoft Office, and Microsoft Project.
  • Ability to make technically sound decisions and accept responsibility for those decisions.
  • Knowledge of basic fabricating and assembly practices/processes for heavy industrial products.
  • Logical problem-solving skills and outstanding organizational skills.
  • Motivated self-starter with the ability to perform duties with minimal supervision.
  • Ability to organize and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
