About the position

The Application Engineer for Rotating Machinery at Voith Turbo plays a crucial role in providing technical sales support and product selection for mechanical variable speed drives utilized in various sectors, including Power Generation and Oil & Gas, as well as emerging fields like hydrogen. This position is integral to the global Sales Support team and requires a solid understanding of mechanical power transmission engineering design and application knowledge, particularly for compressor and pump drive lines. The engineer will work closely with the local Sales Organization in the Americas, assisting in the processing of customer projects and ensuring that technical requirements are met effectively. In this role, the Application Engineer will analyze customer specifications and conduct feasibility checks to translate project requirements into accurate costing and customer offers. They will utilize Voith's selection and pricing tools to make initial product selections that align with customer drive specifications. Additionally, the engineer will provide technical support to outside sales staff during the offer phase, facilitating technical clarification meetings as needed. Once a customer order is received, the engineer will prepare handover documentation for the order execution team in the factory and conduct the necessary handover processes. The Application Engineer will also contribute to the continuous improvement of tools and processes, implementing individual improvement initiatives to enhance efficiency and effectiveness. This position may require national and international travel, estimated at less than 10% of the time, primarily to the USA, Germany, and South America. Extensive time in Germany will be necessary during the initial training period. Furthermore, the engineer will interact with vendors regarding parts supplied as part of the overall drive package, including heat exchangers, connection couplings, and base frames.

Responsibilities

  • Support the local Sales Organization in Americas in processing customer projects.
  • Analyze customers' technical requirements (specifications) and conduct feasibility checks.
  • Translate project requirements into costing and customer offers.
  • Make initial product selections that meet customer drive specifications using Voith selection and pricing tools.
  • Support outside sales staff with technical support during the offer phase, including technical clarification meetings.
  • Prepare handover documentation to the order execution team in the factory once a customer order is received and conduct the handover.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of tools and processes and implement individual improvement initiatives.
  • Interact with vendors concerning parts they supply or propose to supply as part of the overall drive package.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of engineering degree from a four-year accredited college or university.
  • Experience in drive system design & engineering, particularly with high-speed rotating equipment, centrifugal compressors, and centrifugal pumps & fans.
  • Knowledge of air-to-oil and water-to-oil heat exchangers is a plus.
  • Demonstrated effective communication and collaboration teamwork skills.
  • Ability to multi-task based on business needs.
  • Excellent time management skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with mechanical variable speed drives in Power Generation and Oil & Gas sectors.
  • Familiarity with hydrogen applications.
