About the position

As an Application Engineer (Full Stack) at Discover, you will play a crucial role in building and releasing reliable software systems at scale. This position requires you to partner with enterprise-wide teams to develop and maintain full stack solutions that align with our business needs. You will leverage your holistic understanding of all products and their interactions to design elegant solutions and strategize the future state of our larger technical ecosystem. Your ability to independently innovate and advocate for best practices will be essential as you tackle complex problems and guide the team in implementing solutions from inception to production. In this specific role, you will be part of a product team, collaborating with a cross-functional group to design and develop technical solutions while also reviewing the work of your peers. Your contributions will support the core financial functionality of the Card business, focusing on breaking apart monolithic systems into modern, cloud-based microservices. You will be expected to contribute to product team deliverables using Java and Angular programming technologies, diagnose opportunities for automation and efficiency in the end-to-end product delivery cycle, and solve complex technical problems while exploring new ways to bring value to the organization. You will also collaborate with business partners to understand all business requirements, analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with a focus on high quality, including security, reliability, and operations. Achieving team commitments and influencing others to do the same will be part of your responsibilities, as will providing oversight on design decisions and guiding the team to achieve key results for the products assigned. Additionally, you will remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures, while contributing to and leading technology communities at Discover.

Responsibilities

  • Contribute to product team deliverables using Java/Angular programming technology
  • Diagnose opportunities for automation and efficiency in end to end product delivery cycle
  • Solve complex technical problems and explore new ways to bring value
  • Collaborate with our business partners to understand all business requirements
  • Analyze, design, program, test, and deploy new user stories and features with high quality (security, reliability, operations) to production
  • Achieve team commitments and influence others to do the same by using informal leadership & highly developed communication skills
  • Provide oversight on design decisions and guide team to achieve key results for products assigned
  • Remediate issues using engineering principles and create proactive design solutions for potential failures
  • Contribute to and lead technology communities at Discover

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science or related field
  • 3+ years of experience in Information Technology, Software Engineering, or related field
  • Technical proficiency rating of competent on the Dreyfus engineering scale (for internal applicants)

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience with Front End web development with JavaScript frameworks such as React
  • Cloud Technology experience with AWS, Pivotal Cloud Foundry, OpenShift
  • Experience developing and implementing API service architecture
  • Extreme automation mindset as it pertains to testing and build/deploy concepts
  • CI/CD Pipeline experience via Jenkins, Github Actions, Chef, Ansible, Nexus
  • Experience with Gradle, SonarQube, Hoverfly, Junit or Cucumber
