About the position

We are seeking a highly motivated and experienced Applications Engineer to join our Tesla Energy Applications team. As an Applications Engineer focused on telemetry and data reporting, you will be the subject matter expert on data collection requirements and standards applicable to Transmission or Distribution interconnection of industrial battery storage systems and renewable power plants. You will be responsible for development, testing and validation of applicable features into Tesla Energy projects including utility-scale battery power plants. As a key technical member of the cross-functional Applications Engineering team within the Energy Projects group, you will be integral to Tesla's mission of accelerating the world's transition to sustainable energy. In this role, you will provide expertise on utility and ISO/RTO transmission and distribution interconnection requirements and industry standards for telemetry or data capture, including fault recording, sequence of events recording, and meter data. You will gain in-depth product knowledge on Tesla energy storage system telemetry and data collection capabilities. Additionally, you will participate and represent Tesla in national, regional, wholesale market and utility standards committees or industry working groups, formulating clear and concise feedback to external stakeholders and policy makers. Your responsibilities will also include collecting input from a diverse group of stakeholders such as customers, sales, service, firmware, and hardware, distilling this information into user stories, and defining clear requirements for software and firmware development teams. You will develop internal and external technical documentation to educate customers and adjacent teams about newly deployed functionalities and compliance. Furthermore, you will support new Tesla Energy software features by writing specifications and test plans, assisting development and test efforts, managing deployment, and documenting new capabilities. Providing technical support both internally and externally with customers throughout the sales and deployment of Tesla products into new and complex applications will also be a key part of your role.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Degree in Engineering or equivalent experience.
  • Direct Energy industry experience in projects involving interconnection of renewable power plants.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant Energy industry standards such as NERC reliability guidelines for Inverter-based resources, IEEE 2800, or regional regulations such as CAISO Tariff, Business Practice Manuals, ERCOT nodal guidelines.
  • Ability to quickly become familiar with existing and new standards and regulations and stay up to date on the evolution of requirements applying to Tesla Energy projects.
  • Strong understanding of Energy systems including devices such as meters, inverters, SCADA controllers, and network systems.
  • Experience with digital fault recorders or event capture is desired.
  • Understanding of controls and communication protocols such as Modbus, DNP3, IEC 61850, OPC UA is a plus.
  • Demonstrated application of analysis, design, and testing to solve complex engineering problems.
  • Familiarity with programming languages like Python, C, C++, RUST, GO is a plus.
