About the position

As an Applications Engineer at Airgas, you will play a pivotal role in the growth of our specialty gas, industrial, and bulk gas business. This position is based in California, Arizona, or Nevada, and you will be part of the Airgas ALTEC Engineering Solutions Group. Your primary responsibility will be to design and install equipment systems that support Airgas' portfolio of gas applications across various industries. You will focus on providing our customers with comprehensive process solutions that include gases, technology, and equipment, all while emphasizing safety, efficiency, and reliability. In this role, you will be expected to understand the technical processes for specific industrial gas applications. You will diagnose and develop value propositions utilizing Airgas solutions and equipment tailored to these applications, which primarily include inerting, industrial cryogenics, and wastewater treatment in sectors such as refining, pulp & paper, and chemicals. You will provide proactive technical sales support and business development to Airgas' 16 Regional Companies, leveraging your process knowledge, industry experience, and applications background. Your responsibilities will also include collaborating with local sales teams to identify leads through business development techniques, preparing and presenting technical and value-based proposals to prospects and customers. You will be involved in all aspects of customer relationships, from initial contact and problem identification to applications and equipment selection, data analysis, equipment/system development, proposal creation, equipment specification, manufacturing, start-up, and long-term customer support. Additionally, you will identify and develop new products and applications, interface with regional account managers, bulk gas specialists, equipment engineers, and marketing teams, and engage with customers and equipment vendors. You will rely on your extensive experience and judgment to accomplish goals, create training materials, and conduct training sessions for both internal and external customers. You may also assist in the development, oversight, and training of Equipment Engineers and Applications Engineers.

Responsibilities

  • Design and install equipment systems supporting Airgas' gas applications.
  • Provide technical sales support and business development to regional sales groups.
  • Collaborate with local sales teams to identify leads and prepare technical proposals.
  • Manage customer relationships from initial contact to long-term support.
  • Identify and develop new products and applications.
  • Interface with internal teams and external customers and vendors.
  • Create training materials and conduct training sessions for customers and staff.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Chemical Engineering.
  • 3-10 years of applications engineering or direct industry experience.
  • Ability to travel domestically up to 50%, including overnight stays.
  • Willingness to work weekends and/or holidays as needed.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in inerting, industrial cryogenics, and wastewater treatment applications.
  • Familiarity with gas properties and thermodynamics.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills.
