About the position

The Clean Energy Smart Manufacturing Innovation Institute (CESMII) at UCLA is seeking an experienced Applications Engineer to support its mission in advancing Smart Manufacturing (SM) through innovative technology solutions. This position is vital for enhancing research and education initiatives within the organization. The CESMII operates under the Office of Advanced Research Computing (OARC) and collaborates with the U.S. Department of Energy's Advanced Manufacturing Office. The institute focuses on driving innovation in Smart Manufacturing by leveraging advanced technologies such as sensors, controls, analytics, and modeling to improve manufacturing efficiency. The successful candidate will play a key role in facilitating the frictionless movement of data across manufacturing operations, ensuring that stakeholders have access to critical information that enhances performance in quality, throughput, costs, safety, and energy productivity. As an Applications Engineer, you will be responsible for developing and implementing software solutions that align with the goals of CESMII. This includes engaging with customers and end-users to understand their needs and translating those into effective technological solutions. You will work closely with cross-functional teams to design and deploy applications that integrate operational technology (OT) and information technology (IT) environments. Your expertise will contribute to the development of innovative solutions that address complex manufacturing challenges, ensuring that CESMII remains at the forefront of Smart Manufacturing advancements. The role requires a strong background in application engineering, software development, and process engineering, with a focus on the manufacturing sector. You will be expected to demonstrate your ability to communicate complex concepts clearly and effectively, both in writing and verbally, to various stakeholders. Additionally, you will need to prioritize multiple tasks in a dynamic environment while maintaining effective relationships with internal teams and external partners. Responsibilities

  • Develop and implement software solutions to support Smart Manufacturing initiatives.
  • Engage with customers and end-users to gather requirements and translate them into technical specifications.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and deploy applications that integrate OT and IT environments.
  • Provide technical expertise in software development and application knowledge for manufacturing applications.
  • Communicate complex concepts clearly to stakeholders through written and verbal presentations.
  • Prioritize multiple concurrent tasks in a dynamic environment to ensure timely deliverables.
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal teams and external partners.

Requirements

  • 5 years of experience in application engineering or solutions consulting, particularly in software and industrial automation technology.
  • 3 years of experience in the development, testing, or implementation of software platforms, including application software and enterprise software.
  • 3 years of experience in software development or implementation of operational technology (OT) or manufacturing systems.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of the Enterprise Manufacturing landscape.
  • Demonstrated experience in developing innovative solutions in both OT and IT environments.
  • Strong written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.
  • Ability to efficiently prioritize multiple tasks and work in a complex environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • 5 years of process engineering or manufacturing engineering experience.
  • 3 years of customer or end-user project engagement experience.
  • Familiarity with common programming languages such as Java, C#, or Python, and experience with APIs like REST or GraphQL.
  • 1 year of experience with industrial programming languages such as Ladder logic, SFC, or G-Code.
