About the position

The Applied Research Mathematician position at the NSA focuses on conducting world-class research in quantum computing and related mathematical fields to support the agency's Signals Intelligence and Cybersecurity missions. The role involves engaging with quantum computing efforts, identifying research problems, and developing innovative solutions. Candidates are expected to have a strong background in quantum algorithms and error correction, along with programming experience, to contribute to impactful research results.

Responsibilities

  • Engage with NSA and US government quantum computing efforts.
  • Identify important research problems in quantum computing.
  • Conduct research to support NSA and US government goals in quantum computing.
  • Demonstrate effective technical writing and communication skills.
  • Prototype and implement solutions in computer code/scripting.
  • Contribute to other mathematics research efforts as needed.

Requirements

  • Master's degree in Mathematics, Physics, Engineering, Data Science, Computer Science, Statistics, or a related STEM field.
  • At least 24 semester credit hours in advanced mathematics courses.
  • Research and/or development experience in quantum algorithms and/or quantum error correction.
  • Experience with programming languages such as C/C++, Rust, Python, SageMath, or MAGMA.
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in cryptanalysis, cryptography, vulnerability research, or machine learning.
  • Familiarity with statistical analysis and graph algorithms.
  • Interest in theoretical mathematics areas such as linear algebra, number theory, or probability.
