About the position
The Apprentice Attorney in the Appeals & Protests Unit at the Arizona Department of Revenue is a full-time position designed for individuals who have passed the Arizona Bar and are engaged in the Arizona Lawyer Apprentice Program (ALAP). This role involves providing legal advice and representation in contested tax matters and appeals, while working towards full admission to the practice of law. The position requires a Doctor of Jurisprudence degree and offers a hybrid work environment with responsibilities that include legal research, writing briefs, and presenting cases before administrative hearings.
Responsibilities
- Provide legal advice and representation for the Arizona Department of Revenue in contested tax matters.
- Engage in legal research and prepare informative and persuasive briefs on complex legal issues.
- Present and argue cases before the Office of Administrative Hearings, including examination and cross-examination of witnesses.
- Collaborate with team members while also working autonomously on legal matters.
- Ensure compliance with Arizona tax laws and administrative rules.
Requirements
- Doctor of Jurisprudence degree (J.D.) from an A.B.A. accredited law school.
- Ability to become an active member of the State Bar of Arizona within 24 months of employment.
- Achieving a score of 260-269 on a Uniform Bar Exam administered after July 1, 2023.
- Knowledge of Arizona Revised Statutes Title 42 and related tax laws.
- Superb verbal, written, and listening communication skills.
