About the position

The Apprentice Custodian position is an evening role at Cottonwood Sr. High, designed for individuals looking to gain experience in custodial services while receiving on-the-job training. The position requires working from 2:30 PM to 11:00 PM, totaling 40 hours per week. The primary responsibility of the Apprentice Custodian is to assist custodians and administrators in maintaining the cleanliness and safety of the school environment. This includes performing various cleaning tasks such as sweeping, mopping, vacuuming, and garbage removal. Additionally, the role may involve grounds care, building maintenance, and assisting with the movement of equipment. The Apprentice Custodian will also play a part in building security by locking and unlocking doors as needed and ensuring the building is secure at the end of the shift. The job requires physical presence and punctuality, as attendance is crucial for fulfilling the essential duties. The Apprentice Custodian will be trained in various tasks, including routine maintenance of school buildings, cleaning of different areas such as restrooms, hallways, and cafeterias, and maintaining grounds by mowing, edging, and removing debris. The role also includes responsibilities like washing walls and windows, maintaining restroom supplies, and assisting with floor refinishing. The position is non-exempt under the FLSA classification, meaning it is eligible for overtime pay. The successful candidate will be expected to attend all required apprenticeship classes and complete necessary competency logs to ensure they are meeting the standards set by the district.

Responsibilities

• Assists with routine maintenance of school and district buildings.
• Checks and secures building at the beginning and end of shift for safety and cleanliness.
• Cleans rooms, hallways, cafeterias, restrooms, offices, stairways, and other areas according to district standards.
• Washes walls, ceilings, woodwork, windows, doors, and touchpoints.
• Maintains, cleans, and sanitizes restrooms, including refilling dispensers.
• Mops or operates an auto scrubber for floor cleaning.
• Extracts and bonnets carpets as needed.
• Assists with floor refinishing tasks.
• Removes garbage and maintains grounds, including mowing and edging lawns.
• Cleans up graffiti and repairs vandalism.
• Prepares and sets up rooms for meetings and activities, cleaning up afterwards.
• Helps maintain and operate mechanical systems within the building.
• Locks and unlocks doors as required, ensuring building security after hours.
• Attends all required apprenticeship classes and completes competency logs.
• Performs duties to maintain an 80% or higher VEKTR inspection.

Requirements

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• No prior experience required; on-the-job training provided.
• Ability to operate and maintain basic cleaning equipment, including buffers and extractors.
• Understanding of basic cleaning solvents and their proper application.
• Ability to follow oral and written instructions from supervisors.
• Basic reading and math skills.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience in custodial or maintenance work is a plus but not required.
• Familiarity with safety protocols when using cleaning chemicals and equipment.
