The role is essential for the maintenance and installation of electrical infrastructure, ensuring that the community has reliable power services. The apprentice will assist linemen in a variety of tasks, including setting and changing out electric poles, installing and repairing street lights, and hooking up primary and secondary meters. The role also involves operating heavy machinery such as trenchers and backhoes for installation purposes, as well as performing yard work and tree trimming for line clearance. Regular attendance is crucial for this position, and the apprentice will also be expected to participate in monthly safety meetings and adhere to all safety protocols and standards outlined in the Employee Handbook. This position is physically demanding, requiring the ability to perform various physical activities, including lifting heavy objects, climbing, and operating equipment. The apprentice must also possess advanced math skills and mechanical aptitude, as well as the ability to troubleshoot and anticipate issues that may arise during work. Responsibilities

  • Assists linemen in setting and changing out electric poles.
  • Sets pad mounts and hangs transformers.
  • Hangs capacitor banks and hooks up primary and secondary meters.
  • Installs and repairs street light poles and street lights.
  • Repairs meters and operates a trencher and backhoe for installation.
  • Backfills ground and performs yard work.
  • Trims trees for line clearance and runs a chipper for branch disposal.
  • Performs other duties as assigned, including running errands and retrieving additional parts and equipment.
  • Maintains equipment safely and properly and attends monthly safety meetings.

Requirements

  • High School Diploma or GED required.
  • Completion of accredited Line School preferred.
  • Kansas Class A CDL with airbrakes required within six months.
  • Advanced math skills and mechanical aptitude are necessary.
  • Ability to troubleshoot and anticipate issues.
  • Safe driving practices and knowledge of state and local laws regarding motor vehicle operation.

Nice-to-haves

  • Completion of accredited Line School preferred.
