About The Position

The Aquarist, Wet Lab at Roger Williams University is responsible for overseeing the husbandry and maintenance of aquatic systems within the Aquaculture and Aquarium Science Program. This role involves managing optimal living conditions for aquatic species, supervising student employees and volunteers, and assisting in public education and research initiatives. The position requires a flexible work schedule, primarily from Wednesday to Sunday, and is contingent upon grant funding availability.

Requirements

  • B.S. or B.A. in Marine Biology, Aquaculture, or related field.
  • Advanced knowledge of managing fresh and saltwater aquarium systems.
  • Working knowledge of various mechanical, biological, and chemical aquarium filtration systems.
  • Excellent organizational skills to manage time and meet deadlines.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills in verbal and written communication.
  • Ability to work independently while maintaining communication with supervisor.
  • Availability to work a flexible schedule, primarily Wednesday through Sunday.
  • Ability to respond to aquatic life support and aquarium system emergencies.
  • Ability to maintain an IACUC certification.
  • Valid driver's license required.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience in directing students and volunteers in work tasks.
  • At least 1 year of marine larval culture and live feeds experience.
  • Ability to recognize and treat basic fish and reptile diseases.
  • Knowledge of local natural wildlife.
  • Ability to navigate the Internet and use computer functions.

Responsibilities

  • Manage optimal living conditions for aquatic species by monitoring system life support functions and animal health.
  • Assist in constructing, modifying, and dismantling systems and exhibits as required.
  • Monitor animal health through regular inspections and address illnesses or injuries.
  • Administer medical treatments or euthanasia as needed, with support from CEED staff.
  • Recognize and respond to emergency situations in aquatic systems.
  • Assist in small scale production of larval fish and shrimp.
  • Assist in culturing live feeds such as copepods, rotifers, and brine shrimp.
  • Manage the inventory of the aquarium facilities.
  • Submit work orders for maintenance and repair as needed.
  • Recruit, train, and manage husbandry student employees, interns, and volunteers.
  • Direct and supervise student employees and interns in the Wet Lab.
  • Supervise proper laboratory procedures and practices with an emphasis on safety.
  • Assist in public education opportunities and attend meetings as directed.
  • Assist in grant-funded research projects related to the RWU Aquaculture and Aquarium Science Program.
