About the position

The Aquatic Health Ecologist position at the Missouri Department of Conservation focuses on delivering the Fish Kills and Water Quality programs. This role involves supervising a team to monitor aquatic health threats, coordinating research and monitoring projects, and collaborating with various state and federal agencies to inform aquatic health policy and mitigation efforts.

Responsibilities

• Develop research projects on aquatic health threats such as herbicides, pesticides, nutrients, and other pollutants.
• Coordinate multiple research and monitoring projects to improve responses to aquatic health threats.
• Supervise a team of salaried and hourly staff for statewide monitoring of water quality, fish kills, and harmful algal blooms.
• Provide training on water quality, fish kill, and harmful algal bloom investigations to MDC staff and partners.
• Manage water quality, fish kill, and harmful algal bloom data through web-based software applications.
• Collaborate with state and federal partners for water quality criteria development.
• Communicate aquatic health information through presentations, publications, and outreach activities.
• Provide policy support through field work, data collection, and recommendations.
• Manage a laboratory by monitoring supplies and coordinating purchases.

Requirements

• Master's Degree in Environmental Science, Water Quality, Limnology, Fisheries, Biological Sciences, Ecology, or related field.
• At least three years of relevant professional experience.
• Valid driver's license.

Nice-to-haves

• Experience with environmental chemistry, water quality, limnology, and/or fishery science.
• Familiarity with GPS equipment and GIS software.
