About the position

The City and County of Denver is seeking a dedicated and accomplished Aquatics Operations Coordinator to join our team within the Department of Parks and Recreation (DPR). This position plays a crucial role in supporting the centralized operations of the Aquatics Office and the extensive network of aquatic facilities across Denver. As an Aquatics Operations Coordinator, you will be part of a vibrant team of over 400 lifeguards working across 15 indoor and 16 outdoor swimming pools, ensuring the delivery of high-quality aquatic programs, safety, and customer service to our diverse community. In this role, you will collaborate with colleagues to enhance recruitment, training, and retention efforts for staff members throughout Denver Parks and Recreation's aquatic facilities. Your core responsibilities will include partnering with other Aquatic Coordinators to deliver swim lessons, water fitness classes, and in-service training. You will also be responsible for coordinating a comprehensive staffing model that encompasses candidate sourcing, tracking, and structuring the hiring process, as well as supporting staff employment verifications and onboarding. Additionally, you will manage scheduling for lifeguard certification courses and organize inventory and supplies for all pools. You will be instrumental in creating and delivering annual process improvement work plans, ensuring that our aquatic facilities meet the needs of the community while fostering a safe and enjoyable environment for all participants.

Responsibilities

  • Partner with the Office of Human Resources to assist with the recruitment, assessment, and onboarding of lifeguard candidates.
  • Create, implement, and lead structures for system-wide schedules for swim lessons, water fitness classes, junior lifeguard, and other new and innovative aquatics program strategies.
  • Contact lifeguard candidates to discuss employment, training opportunities, and schedule pool placement.
  • Schedule, conduct, and evaluate American Red Cross Lifeguarding training opportunities for lifeguard candidates, including instruction and maintenance of course records.
  • Evaluate the staff models and program quality.
  • Maintain records of employee certifications while proactively planning recertification opportunities for internal staff members.
  • Create and foster partnerships with community leaders, neighborhood organizations, local schools, and other community partners to design programs that fit their unique needs and promote employment opportunities.
  • Collaborate with the Senior Recreation Supervisor and Program Administrator to identify community and facility needs, and create plans to address these needs.
  • Conduct monthly in-service training on emergency procedures for Recreation and Aquatics staff.
  • Perform other related duties as assigned or requested.

Requirements

  • Graduation from high school or possession of a GED, HiSET or TASC Certificate.
  • Three (3) years of work experience instructing in an organized aquatic program involving the monitoring of pool equipment, pool chemicals, and pool operations.
  • Requires a Lifeguard Training Certification, CPR and AED Certifications for Professional Rescuers, and First Aid Certification at the time of application.
  • Requires a Lifeguard Instructor Certification, First Aid Instructor Certification, and a Certified Pool Operator or Aquatic Facility Operator Certification prior to completion of the probationary period.

Nice-to-haves

  • Exceptional interpersonal skills, including experience hiring, working with, and mentoring youth.

  • Technical proficiency in Microsoft Excel and Digiquatics (or other staff scheduling platforms).
  • Experience delivering American Red Cross learning materials and classes.
  • Experience performing lead work/supervisory duties over aquatics staff.
  • American Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor (LGI) certification.
  • Certified Pool Operator (CPO) and/or Aquatic Facility Operator (AFO) certifications.
