About the position

The Architect / Interior Designer plays a crucial role in the Planning and Design team at Caltech, contributing to various projects from the planning and design phase through to completion. This position requires a blend of creativity and technical knowledge to develop innovative design solutions that enhance functionality and adaptability in various spaces, including offices and laboratories.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct site assessments and gather data on existing facilities to inform the planning and design process.
  • Develop schematic layout options for various spaces, considering space optimization, equipment placement, and safety regulations.
  • Create design concepts, layouts, and mood boards to communicate the proposed interior design vision.
  • Assist in selecting and specifying materials, finishes, furniture, and fixtures that align with project goals.
  • Apply knowledge of building codes and safety standards, coordinating with Caltech's Environmental Health and Safety Office.
  • Prepare detailed project planning and design presentations for stakeholder review.
  • Create realistic renderings of renovations and signage for project scope review and approvals.
  • Stay updated with emerging trends and best practices in space planning and laboratory design.
  • Assist in updating Design Guidelines related to architecture and interior design.
  • Responsible for the graphic design of all campus signage.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Master's degree in Architecture, Interior Design, or a related field.
  • Strong familiarity with furniture systems selection and specification.
  • Excellent graphic representation and communication skills.
  • Familiarity with building codes, accessibility requirements, safety regulations, and sustainability principles.
  • Proficiency in design software such as AutoCAD, Revit, rendering, and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to travel to existing spaces for data collection across campus.
