About the position

The Architected Responsive Materials Engineer position at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL) involves conducting research and development in the field of architected responsive materials, additive manufacturing, and material modeling. The role requires collaboration with a multidisciplinary team to design and implement innovative solutions, analyze data, and publish research findings. This position is essential for advancing the Laboratory's mission to enhance national security through cutting-edge materials research.

Responsibilities

  • Conduct research and development in architected responsive materials, additive/advanced manufacturing, material modeling, and microscale material testing.
  • Design, implement, and analyze techniques in responsive materials and additive manufacturing.
  • Organize, analyze, and present data from research activities.
  • Contribute to the conception, design, and execution of research addressing defined problems.
  • Pursue independent research interests and collaborate with a broad spectrum of scientists.
  • Publish research results in peer-reviewed journals and present at conferences and technical meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • Independently resolve technical objectives and criteria to satisfy project objectives (SES.3 level).
  • Apply advanced technical knowledge to guide project completion and serve as the primary technical contact (SES.3 level).
  • Collaborate with project leaders and management to represent technical capabilities and project results (SES.3 level).

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent experience.
  • Experience in responsive metamaterial design, material formulation, additive manufacturing, multi-material printing, finite element analysis, and material characterization.
  • Demonstrated ability as an innovative experimentalist with experience in experimental design and execution.
  • Proven ability to develop independent research projects, evidenced by publications in peer-reviewed literature.
  • Proficient verbal and written communication skills for effective collaboration and presentation of technical information.
  • Strong initiative and interpersonal skills for working in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.

Nice-to-haves

  • Master's or PhD in Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Materials Science & Engineering, or a related field.
  • Experience with analytic and computational modeling and simulation, and data analysis.
  • Experience with material characterization and mechanical testing methods.
  • Experience with programming languages such as LabVIEW, MATLAB, Python, and C/C++.
  • Experience with cloud computing and high-performance computing.
  • Experience designing and assembling hardware for automated systems.
