About the position

As an Architectural Designer 5 at Black & Veatch, you will play a crucial role in the development and execution of design concepts and deliverables for various projects. Your responsibilities will encompass applying your knowledge of engineering standards, systems, and document control to ensure that all deliverables meet the required codes and standards. You will be expected to proactively engage with the Black & Veatch Quality Program, demonstrating personal accuracy and supporting continuous improvement initiatives. Your role will also involve reviewing design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with project specifications. In terms of engineering production, you will apply basic engineering principles and established design practices to develop moderately complex design concepts. You will begin to exercise judgment in decision-making regarding deliverables and input interpretation, and you will be capable of handling challenging technical assignments within your area of expertise. This includes performing design calculations, estimating material quantities, and maintaining project schedules. You may also be involved in programming control systems and participating in plant start-up activities related to your specialized area of expertise. Project coordination will be a key aspect of your role, as you will collaborate with other design group personnel to exchange necessary project information for design development. You will also focus on the needs of internal clients while understanding the main interests and drivers of external clients. Knowledge sharing and innovation will be encouraged, as you will be expected to seek and share knowledge of the latest technologies and processes. Additionally, you may assist in mentoring and guiding less experienced engineering technicians, contributing to their professional development and performance management. Responsibilities

  • Applies knowledge of standards, systems, document control, departmental guides, applicable codes and Black and Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Reviews project requirements and determines the correct format and contents of required deliverables.
  • Proactively applies Black and Veatch Quality Program to deliverables.
  • Demonstrates personal accuracy and supports continuous improvement and change management efforts.
  • Reviews design inputs to ensure consistency and compliance with specific codes and standards.
  • Develops moderately complex design concepts and deliverables using basic engineering principles and established design practices.
  • Handles difficult technical assignments and provides technical guidance to other professionals.
  • Performs design calculations, detailed material quantities, and estimates.
  • Coordinates with other design group personnel to review and exchange project information necessary for design development.
  • Focuses on the needs of internal clients while understanding external clients' main interests and drivers.
  • Seeks and shares knowledge of latest technologies and processes.
  • Assists with performance management, mentoring, and recognition of lesser experienced Engineering technicians.

Requirements

  • Diploma or Certificate preferred.
  • Associate Degree in Drafting or an Engineering Design Related Technology preferred.
  • Typically a minimum of 5 years related work experience.
  • Intermediate knowledge of engineering standards, systems, document control, departmental guides and Black and Veatch policies and procedures.
  • Intermediate industry knowledge and technology trends.
  • Intermediate knowledge of company quality program.
  • Advanced ability to interpret engineering deliverable content as assigned.
  • Basic knowledge of construction and constructability practices and principles.
  • Basic knowledge of engineering design principles and applicable design guides related to assigned engineering discipline.
