About the position

Kaplan Thompson Architects is seeking an Architectural Designer with 0 to 3 years of professional experience to join their Portland, Maine office. The firm focuses on sustainable and creative design for various projects, including single-family homes, multi-family residential, educational, and non-profit designs. The position requires in-person work for the first six months, followed by flexible work options.

Responsibilities

  • Exhibit design skill
  • Show technical ability through BIM and presentation tasks
  • Communicate with architectural staff and leadership, and occasionally clients and builders
  • Work comfortably within a collaborative team structure
  • Develop industry awareness of sustainable solutions
  • Produce work that is consistent with the quality and design aesthetic of the firm and the region
  • Participate in office culture and strive for professional and personal development

Requirements

  • Minimum BArch completed
  • 0-3 years of relevant work experience
  • Location within commuting distance of Portland
  • Ability to attend construction site visits within a 3-hour range of Portland
  • Regular in-person client meetings and office events
  • Access to the office requires climbing one flight of stairs
  • Construction administration requires navigating job sites lacking accessibility features
  • Excellent aesthetic and/or technical design skills
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Drafting with BIM modeling experience

Nice-to-haves

  • Concentration in sustainable design
  • Solid macramé and/or needle-felting skills
  • Education/interest/experience in the field of sustainable design
  • Experience with ArchiCAD
  • Software proficiency with Mac, Microsoft Office, Gsuite, Adobe Creative Suite, Keynote or Powerpoint
