About the position

IA Interior Architects is seeking an Architectural Designer/Job Captain for our New York studio. This role is pivotal in translating client goals, brand, and culture into powerful environments that are built around people, processes, technologies, and business drivers. As part of the largest global architecture firm focusing exclusively on interiors, you will be involved in creating high-performance, visually compelling, and sustainable environments that support our clients' enterprises and engage their staff. The Job Captain will work under the general supervision of a Senior Job Captain and/or Architect or Project Manager, providing essential design support primarily in project administration, design development, and contract documents. In this position, you will be responsible for creating construction documents (CDs) and reviewing them to ensure compliance with firm standards, mechanical systems, building codes, and ADA requirements. For smaller projects, you may oversee all CD production and review. You will also coordinate with senior technical staff and design staff to provide technical solutions for design dilemmas. Additionally, you will manage projects through the contract administration phase, ensuring that engineering consultants' work complies with design solutions and that documents are submitted in a timely manner. You will be responsible for managing the contract administration budget for assigned projects, ensuring adherence to the set budget, and promptly informing relevant parties of any potential variances. As a Job Captain, you may also mentor Junior and Intermediate Designers, overseeing their tasks and providing feedback on their work products. Conducting client interviews to determine technical requirements for the design will also be part of your responsibilities. This role requires a collaborative, creative, and professional approach, as well as a passion for interiors and a commitment to delivering exceptional design solutions.

Responsibilities

  • Mentors Junior and Intermediate Designers, overseeing tasks and providing feedback.
  • Conducts client interviews to determine technical requirements for the design.

Requirements

  • Graduate of architecture or design school; equivalent experience may be substituted.
  • 5+ years' work experience on corporate interior design projects.
  • Extensive knowledge of design principles and standards.
  • Intermediate documentation and field observational skills.
  • Advanced interior architecture detailing skills.
  • Working knowledge of CDs and procedures.
  • Working knowledge of building systems, codes, and ADA requirements.
  • Working knowledge of space requirements.
  • Working knowledge of contract administration.
  • Intermediate MS Office Suite skills.
  • Advanced Revit skills.
  • Advanced Adobe Creative Suite skills.
  • Advanced verbal and written communication skills.
  • Intermediate presentation and graphic communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and lead junior staff through a combination of direct authority and subject matter expertise.
