About the position

As an Area Asset Protection Manager at REI, you will play a crucial role in safeguarding the Co-op's assets and ensuring a secure environment for both employees and customers. This position involves collaborating with cross-divisional leaders and teams across a designated geographical area to mitigate losses and enhance safety protocols. You will be responsible for leading investigations into various risk or loss situations within retail stores, developing solutions in partnership with other Asset Protection and Risk Management teams, and driving results that align with organizational goals. Your role will also include managing a team of specialists and vendor guards, ensuring they are well-trained and equipped to handle security challenges effectively. In addition to your investigative responsibilities, you will work closely with local law enforcement and community outreach partners to foster a safe shopping experience. This includes building partnerships with local city resources to address issues such as homelessness, substance abuse, and mental health, thereby positively impacting the community and enhancing the customer experience. You will also be tasked with advocating for continuous improvement in inventory accuracy to drive profitability and support the onboarding and development of store leaders on relevant Asset Protection and Risk Management topics. Your schedule will require flexibility, as you will need to respond to emergency incidents and conduct training sessions during various shifts, including evenings and weekends. Staying updated on security industry trends and best practices will be essential to your success in this role, as will your ability to convey knowledge effectively to others. Overall, your contributions will be vital in ensuring the safety and security of REI's operations and the communities it serves.

Responsibilities

  • Initiates and resolves complex investigations into a variety of risk or loss situations within the retail store or stores.
  • Leads and develops the security team members at assigned location(s).
  • Flexible availability to respond to emergency response incidents and threats.
  • Works closely with law enforcement to ensure all case information is accurate, complete, and represented effectively.
  • Builds partnerships with local city resources and community outreach programs to provide retail stores with necessary resources.
  • Partners with other community retailers to understand security trends in the community.
  • Seeks opportunities and advocates for continuous improvement related to inventory accuracy to drive profitability.
  • Ensures the execution and performance of the AP & RM program for their assigned locations.
  • Supports the onboarding and ongoing development of leaders in stores you support on relevant AP & RM topics.
  • Drives the onboarding of Safety & Security Specialists and vendor guards.
  • Collaborates with HQ Asset Protection and the store managers to establish and deepen the understanding and support of in-store AP & RM activities.
  • Participates in periodic training and subject matter updates; stays up to date on security industry trends and best practices.

Requirements

  • Minimum of 5 years asset protection / loss prevention experience, including systems and operations in a retail store or distribution center setting with a national brand (or equivalent experience).
  • Knowledge of local laws on theft, shoplifting and apprehension.
  • Ability to apply effective analytical and critical thinking skills, solve problems independently and as part of a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to effectively convey knowledge, information, and skills to others through in-person and virtual sessions.
  • Experience with PC applications, preferably Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Access.
  • Demonstrated ability to be self-directed and to deliver results independently and as a team member.
  • Strong interpersonal and writing skills; ability to interact well and build rapport with individuals at all levels within and outside the organization.
  • Demonstrated capacity to exercise prudent judgment after assessing situational circumstances.

Nice-to-haves

  • Experience in building partnerships with local community outreach organizations and leveraging them as a resource.
  • Experience in educating store teams on interacting with customers in the store, including individuals experiencing homelessness, substance abuse, or mental health challenges.
  • Broad knowledge of REI's business operations, computer environment and applications.
  • Ability to initiate better work methods and procedures.
