About the position

The primary purpose and function of the Area Chief of Staff at Banfield Pet Hospital is to lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in their hospitals. This role is crucial in ensuring that Banfield can attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors who will deliver quality care and meet expected hospital performance measures. The Area Chief of Staff drives the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team (DVM, CVT, VA) in their assigned hospitals, ensuring that every pet receives consistent care that aligns with Banfield's six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. This position partners with the Practice Manager (if applicable) to foster a culture of quality and safety at the hospital level, optimizing medical care, client experience, associate engagement, and overall hospital performance. In this role, the Area Chief of Staff will perform regular hospital visits and quality audits to ensure compliance with industry, regulatory, and Banfield quality standards while building engagement among associate veterinarians. The position involves developing, coaching, and managing associate veterinarians on the technical and functional skills necessary for success in their roles, delivering outstanding, high-quality medical care that supports the business by meeting hospital performance expectations. Additionally, the Area Chief of Staff will collaborate with the Director of Veterinary Quality (DVQ) to drive a successful and growing doctor team through recruiting, gathering referrals, assisting with interviews, and leading onboarding and training of new associate and locum veterinarians. The Area Chief of Staff is also responsible for delivering on veterinary quality KPIs to support the hospital, market, and practice OGSMs. This includes performing clinical skill and leadership competency development of associate and lead veterinarians, identifying and developing future veterinary talent for leadership roles, and implementing strategies to enhance doctor engagement and retention. The role requires active participation in local, state, and national veterinary organizations to cultivate relationships within the veterinary profession and promote Banfield's brand reputation. Furthermore, the Area Chief of Staff ensures that hospital operations meet all local, state, and federal regulatory requirements, including compliance with controlled substance management and radiation safety.

Responsibilities

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • 3 years experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
