About the position

The Area Chief of Staff plays a crucial role in leading, developing, and managing associate veterinarians within their hospitals. This position is essential for ensuring that Banfield can attract, develop, engage, and retain doctors who are committed to delivering quality care and meeting the expected performance measures of the hospital. The Area Chief of Staff is responsible for driving the culture and delivery of quality care by the veterinary provider team, which includes Doctors of Veterinary Medicine (DVM), Certified Veterinary Technicians (CVT), and Veterinary Assistants (VA). This role ensures that every pet receives consistent care that aligns with Banfield's six domains of quality: safe, effective, patient/client-centered, timely, efficient, and equitable care. In collaboration with the Practice Manager, the Area Chief of Staff will champion quality by communicating, demonstrating, and fostering a culture of quality and safety at the hospital level. This involves performing regular hospital visits and quality audits to ensure compliance with industry standards, regulatory requirements, and Banfield's quality standards. The Area Chief of Staff will also develop, coach, and manage associate veterinarians, equipping them with the technical and functional skills necessary to deliver outstanding medical care and meet hospital performance expectations. Additionally, the Area Chief of Staff will work closely with the Director of Veterinary Quality to build a successful and growing team of doctors. This includes recruiting, gathering referrals, assisting with interviews, and leading the onboarding and training of new associate and locum veterinarians. The role also involves delivering on veterinary quality KPIs, developing future veterinary talent for leadership roles, and driving engagement and retention efforts for both veterinarians and certified veterinary technicians. The Area Chief of Staff will manage medical equipment inventory and functionality, ensuring that all operations meet local, state, and federal regulatory requirements. Active participation in veterinary organizations is also expected to promote Banfield's brand reputation.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, develop, and manage associate veterinarians in hospitals.

  • Perform regular hospital visits and quality audits to ensure compliance with standards.
  • Develop, coach, and manage associate veterinarians on necessary skills for success.
  • Partner with the Director of Veterinary Quality to build a successful doctor team.
  • Deliver on veterinary quality KPIs to support hospital performance expectations.
  • Identify and develop future veterinary talent for leadership roles.
  • Manage medical equipment inventory and functionality in assigned hospitals.
  • Participate in local, state, and national veterinary organizations to promote Banfield's brand.
  • Ensure hospital operations meet all regulatory requirements.

Requirements

  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM/VMD) or equivalent degree required.
  • Veterinary license in good standing or eligibility for licensure with the applicable state veterinary board.
  • 3 years experience in small animal medicine and surgery practice.
  • Proven ability to perform all basic surgeries and use standard medical instruments.
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to translate problems into practical solutions.
  • Ability to multi-task and manage multiple tasks under distracting conditions.
  • Demonstrated organizational ability and systematic approach in assignments.
