About the position

The Area Safety Manager for Eastern & Central PA at Heidelberg Materials is responsible for leading and supervising a team of safety professionals to ensure compliance with safety regulations and promote a strong safety culture across mining, asphalt, and construction operations. This role involves implementing safety programs, conducting inspections and audits, investigating incidents, and providing training to employees.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and supervise safety professionals across Eastern and Central PA.
  • Mentor and develop team members, ensuring they have the resources and support needed.
  • Build ownership of safety in the business by providing leadership and feedback.
  • Implement company and area safety programs and requirements effectively.
  • Regularly review employee safety programs for adequacy and effectiveness, recommending improvements.
  • Facilitate discussions on process safety controls to minimize exposure to hazards.
  • Oversee participation in Federal and State Safety and Health inspections and coordinate loss prevention inspections.
  • Conduct regular safety audits to identify and rectify potential hazards.
  • Investigate industrial incidents, injuries, and occupational diseases to determine root causes and preventive measures.
  • Develop and deliver training programs to ensure compliance with safety standards.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent experience.
  • More than 5 years of directly related experience in safety management.
  • Professional certification such as Certified Safety Professional (CSP) or Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) preferred.
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws, MSHA/OSHA/DOT regulations, and accident prevention programs.
  • Basic understanding of state workers' compensation and general liability insurance requirements.
  • Proficiency with tools and technologies including Word, Excel, Teams, and PowerPoint.
  • High level of written and verbal communication skills.

Nice-to-haves

  • Prior supervisory experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience conducting effective training meetings in front of large audiences.
