About the position

The Armed Public Safety Supervisor at Emory Healthcare is responsible for ensuring the safety and security of the healthcare environment. This role involves supervising public safety officers, responding to emergencies, and maintaining safety standards while providing a supportive atmosphere for patients, staff, and visitors. The supervisor will also engage in training, performance management, and collaboration with various stakeholders to uphold the organization's commitment to safety and security.

Responsibilities

  • Patrols facilities and property to detect unauthorized persons or activities and ensure safety standards are maintained.
  • Maintains communication with Supervisors, fellow Officers, Security Operations Center, and Law Enforcement to report incidents and safety irregularities.
  • Responds to confrontations and restrains individuals as necessary, providing support during patient emergencies.
  • Observes safety precautions and established protocols for patient restraints and holds in accordance with regulations.
  • Administers initial first aid as appropriate based on training.
  • Investigates and documents safety hazards, incidents, and criminal activities for reporting to leadership and law enforcement.
  • Participates in non-security activities as approved by Security Management, such as patient escort and equipment checks.
  • Interviews and investigates individuals involved in suspicious activities and detains unauthorized individuals as per policy.
  • Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls, using judgment to determine appropriate actions.
  • Initiates and evaluates Code Red drills as required by The Joint Commission.
  • Maintains proficiency with issued firearms and less-than-lethal equipment.
  • Makes recommendations for changes in safety and security procedures to enhance service quality.
  • Assists with daily huddles and leadership tasks as assigned, acting as PS Supervisor in their absence.
  • Trains new Public Safety Officers and provides education on safety-related topics to hospital staff.
  • Manages shift operations of public safety officers, assigning daily duties and preparing work schedules.
  • Interacts with the EHC community, including clinical and law enforcement leaders.
  • Leads the Field Training process for new officers and recommends policy changes to improve operations.
  • Assists in interviewing and selecting new staff for the department and ensures timely approval of public safety reports.
  • Supervises staff performance, providing feedback and addressing training needs, while monitoring workflow and recommending disciplinary actions when necessary.
  • Administers departmental policies in compliance with organizational and governmental guidelines and evaluates safety standards accordingly.

Requirements

  • Four (4) years of security, military, or law enforcement experience.
  • Meets expectations on the most recent Emory Healthcare performance review (if applicable).
  • No disciplinary action higher than a verbal warning during the most recent performance review period (if applicable).
  • Proficient in all assigned equipment and weapons upon training.

Nice-to-haves

  • Attend EHS Public Safety Trainer Course within 6 months of promotion.
  • Complete EHC PS Leadership Course within 6 months.
  • Complete FEMA IS 242, 904, 914, 915; OBP- AWR-903; FEMA IS 240, 241; and OBP AWR-340 within 12 months of hire.
  • Obtain IAHSS Advanced Certification; IAHSS Supervisor Certification; EHC Public Safety Advanced Firearms Certification; CPI or Equivalent Instructor Certification; IAHSS Healthcare Safety Certificate; and IAHSS Work Place Violence Certification within 12 months of hire.
